MGM Cotai

A unique architectural expression of nine, oversized jewelry boxes adorned by Chinese decorative motifs becomes a new addition to the glamorous atmosphere of Macau – in the name of MGM Cotai.

MGM Cotai is a 35-storey commercial development which covers a total floor area of over four million square feet, which is then divided into differently-sized, tri-colored boxes stacked atop each other. These boxes eventually form two interconnected towers that populate its elongated site.

A generous arc defines its drop-off area, with two portico-like structures that serve as the main and VIP entrance. Here, guests are offered access to numerous VIP suites, gaming rooms, and a spa. Further ascending to the podium is a series of villas, pavilions, gardens, and service areas.

The complex also offers a 1,400-room hotel, a 200,000-sqft casino, as well as a multi-functional area named the “Spectacle” – the world’s largest grid-shaped, free-span glass roof. Measuring as long as a soccer field, the Spectacle features a meticulously engineered long-span diagrid structure with no columns in sight. To support its weight, its roof morphs into multiple peaks and valleys.

The rectilinear form of these boxes called for fragmented voids in-between each volume. Apart from breaking the building’s singularity, they also endow a sense of grandeur to the site while enhancing visitor experience.

At night, MGM Cotai offers an eye-catching architectural experience. Its subtle, unique light design shimmers with different hues of gold, silver, and bronze undertones. To achieve this, an integrated lighting system was developed across all four of its elevations. Made from roughly 60,000 LED fixtures, the surface of the projecting feature fins produce a captivating light show.

By utilizing the composition of similar elements while creatively integrating the gaps between each form, MGM Cotai transformed into a mountain landscape-like structure that represents a modern-day sculptural silhouette – the abstract composition of which allowing for a variety of interpretations.
