VIA 57 West

In a world where skyscraper-filled horizons are becoming the norm, this residential building in New York is a hybrid of the traditional American high rise and the European perimeter block.

VIA 57 West is one of the latest additions in the skyline of lower Manhattan. Designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), it introduces a new type of building typology called the “Courtscraper.” It combines the density of the American skyscraper and the lush communal spaces of the European courtyard. The entire building has a total floor area of 830,000 square feet divided into 709 residential units, wrapping a lush 22,000-sqft courtyard garden.

Residents of this 32-storey building enjoy uninterrupted views of the waterfront and the Hudson River Park. At its northeast corner, the building peaks at 450 feet – thereby maximizing the number of apartments while preserving views of the river from the adjacent Helena Tower. Depending on the viewers’ vantage point, the building’s volume changes due to its asymmetrical form. From the west, it looks like a hyperbolic paraboloid or a warped pyramid, whereas its eastern view appears to be a slender spire.

Lower floors of the VIA embody a powerful spatial and visual connection to the courtyard. The latter directly integrates with the lobby via a grand stair, while a series of sports and recreational amenities engulf the entire garden. Above, apartments are organized on a fishbone layout, directing units towards a breathtaking view of the waters. To maximize natural views and lighting while limiting privacy, large terraces are carved into the building’s warped façade.

Apart from its form, the material concept for its interior design also represents the integration between American and European design. Known as “Scandimerican,” it blends local New York materials with classic modern Scandinavian material sensibilities.

Its central courtyard garden serving as an urban oasis for its residents is one of the many ways VIA 57 West redefines its vision of green living and sustainability with respect to nature and human well-being. Four core elements support its paradigm for environmental sustainability – air, water, energy, and earth. For example, the building recycles 60,000 gallons of water every day, all the while using ethically-sourced wood and regularly improving its gloriously thriving landscaped courtyard.

With a unique vision for the future of tall buildings, the VIA 57 West showcases a visually appealing and high-quality architecture, answering to the needs of its users all the while attending to its environmental responsibilities.
