Yukon Shopping Mall
Showcasing unconventional forms of how the natural and the built environment coincide, this rectangular shopping mall by BYSstudio strays away from your usual shopping mall by fragmenting itself with a free-flowing, elongated garden right in the middle of its transparent, geometric form.
The Yukon Shopping Mall is a four-story commercial center designed by BYSstudio. Fronted by two access roads on its two adjacent sides, contrasting geometries of huge glass panels with sharp black linings and curvaceous walls of engineered wood defined the exteriors of its street-facing façade.
Transparent from the outside, the interiors feature spanning slabs and columns extending into four floors. Each story features an open floor layout with thin, sleek ceilings punctured by recessed linear lights.
Delving inside its irregularly sinuous opening is an elongated garden filled with spanning trees, foliage, and a wooden walkway that connects the two, now-fragmented glass volumes into a single form of alternating enclosed and free-flowing forms.
To further emphasize the curvaceous opening at its midpoint, the majority of its edges along the façade are lined with bright, white lighting. Such exterior illumination contrasts well with the linearly-arranged lighting on the interiors of Yukon Shopping Mall.
In the wise words of British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, we often forget that we, humans, are a part of nature. We are nature, and that it should be not separated from us. This is why when the time comes that humans lost their connection to nature, humans have also lost their connection to themselves. With Yukon Shopping Mall integrating a sinuous garden right in the middle of its sharp, geometric form, an unspoken dialogue of human-to-nature connection begins.
