Greenland Rong Bay Office

With the rise of parametricism in contemporary avant-garde architecture, even the most unimaginable forms have been made possible thanks to accurate computation and modeling technologies. One of which is Changsha’s Greenland Rong Bay Office designed by STUDIO GÁSE.

An organically flowing exterior skin of perforated metal skin wraps this multi-story sales building for Greenland Rong Bay Office by Shanghai-based firm STUDIO GÁSE. Designed and built from 2014 to 2016, the project is located right at the core of the city of Changsha, near the famous tourist attractions of Yuelu Mountain and Xiangjiang River right at the foot of the Juzizhou Bridge.

Arguably the most notable feature of the Greenland Rong Bay Office is its single-curved perforated metal shell that creates a layer of waterproof and thermal-resistant skin that also protects the work environment inside from air pollution.

Composed of hundreds and thousands of metal panels from different angles, a parametric equation was used to precisely calculate its notable hyperbolic form. Its computational and parametric approach to design made its distinct volume possible.

The same curvilinear volume is followed throughout the interiors, which in addition to its perforated exterior skin that wraps the entire building in translucency, naturally illuminated the space. Behind this perforated exterior skin lies a layer of full-height glass panels that further enhanced natural illumination throughout the interiors. The natural lighting it offers indirectly enhanced the work environment of its occupant-employees.

Sprung alongside Changsha’s well-renowned attractions, the Greenland Rong Bay Office serves as a parametric feat on today’s architecture and construction – perfectly blending against the city’s natural wonders.
