Samothrace Tower

Among countless arrays of sprouting skyscrapers competing to be the world’s tallest, the conceptual design for this residential skyscraper is all about beauty and grace.

Captivating myths and stories of ancient Greece inspired renowned Russian architect and businessman Vasily Klyukin to design the Samothrace Tower, an architectural masterpiece whose form is derived from 2nd-century BC marble sculpture “Winged Victory of Samothrace.”

In today’s era where towers typically compete in height, one might ask “why model a skyscraper after an angelic deity?” According to Klyukin, he opted the tower not to compete in terms of height, but instead by showcasing its timeless beauty combined with a dynamic anatomy.

Looking closer, one is introduced to a seemingly endless layer of glass panels delineating its winged form. A protruding façade featuring Nike of Samothrace in her unfazed yet delicate stance reverberates throughout its otherwise orthogonal form. Unapologetically bold, the straightforward integration of the sculpture created an interesting juxtaposition between ancient mythology and ultra-modern architecture – and how both concepts can coexist to create a structure with its own interesting backstory, to which Klyukin’s firm is passionate about.

While its final location is still unknown, possible candidates include Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Multiple visualizations feature the tower overlooking a vast waterfront – celebrating a victorious sea battle that rose the goddess to eternal recognition. The well-thought symbolism behind its form further amplifies its potential to singlehandedly drive a locality’s economy, tourism, and investment – one Hellenistic skyscraper at a time.
